The 4-Step Month-End Checklist for Small Businesses
Maya Bennett, Certified Bookkeeper · March 4, 2026
A calm, repeatable month-end rhythm: categorise, reconcile, review and report.
Month-end does not have to mean a shoebox of receipts and a late night with a spreadsheet. A simple checklist — categorise, reconcile, review, report — keeps your books clean every single month.
Start by categorising every transaction while it is fresh. Then reconcile each bank and card account line by line, so your books match reality. Review profit and loss against the previous month and ask what moved and why. Finally, file your reports where you can find them: P&L, balance sheet and aged receivables.
Do this on the same day each month and your year-end becomes a non-event. Our care-plan clients use exactly this rhythm, and it is the reason their tax season is calm.
